A couple of months ago I was working in the journaling Bible I am creating for my son, and came upon Psalm 42:1-2. It says “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”
I knew I wanted to paint a deer, but animals are quite hard to paint! Then I realized I could paint a silhouette! Silhouettes don’t require much talent because you don’t have to paint any actual features and just need to color in an outline!
I created a little deer traceable to make it even easier and got to painting. I originally did this deer silhouette in acrylic in the Baby’s Bible, but then loved it so much that I decided to do it again using watercolors in my personal Bible!
Check out the video below to see just how I created this watercolor deer page!

Key Tips
As always, I am sharing my page to provide inspiration! You, of course, can go many different ways with this. U
I did not prep my page! I very very rarely prep because I use the same eight supplies for almost all of my Bible journaling pages. I have never had bleed through with those eight supplies! But, you can find out more about page prep HERE.
A common question I get asked is: “if you were to use watercolor on one side of the page, and then paint on the backside, will it cause the original painting to bleed/run?” It definitely shouldn’t! When watercolor is still wet, yes, the paint can still be picked up or moved, but once it dries completely, it is rather permanent. – In the video above, you can see that when I painted my page, I painted the deer first, and then painted the background on top of it, and that deer stayed put!
I also get asked if I can still read the scripture after I paint on top of it. The vast majority of the time, when I use watercolors, I can still read the text! This page, for example, I can still read completely. In the acrylic version I did, that
