Mixed Bouquet Tutorial- Bible Journaling With Me

Hi friend!

I have taught how to do a couple different kinds of watercolor flowers here, but I realized after getting a few requests that I have never shown how to do a “mixed bouquet” of sorts where you combine multiple florals on a page!

I have tutorials that go more in-depth on how to create the two flowers I used HERE (for the roses) and HERE (for the main pink flower.)

The video tutorial at the bottom of this post shows how I made my page. I think that it is easier to understand how to do things when you watch someone else in action. Usually, I try to keep my tutorial videos under 15 minutes, but found I just couldn’t stop talking when making this video! Hopefully, you will find that my spew has some good information 😉 .

One thing I don’t mention in the video is composition.

Floral Composition

Once you know how to make the florals and leaves, putting them together is rather simple. But I do think there is one extra challenge if you are new to painting or the art world, and that is figuring out the composition or placement.

This is something that starts to come naturally after practice, but I do have a few tips for finding the best placement of your floral elements when combining them.

  1. Odd numbers are more appealing to the eye. This is not always true, but generally, odd numbers look better. You can see I used 3 flowers and three leaf sets on my page. If I were to have added another flower it probably wouldn’t have looked terrible, but odd numbers help to keep it balanced.
  2. Place items slightly off-center. In my bouquet here, this comes into play in a couple of ways. First, my main focal point flower (the pink one) is not perfectly center, hight wise, on my page. And also, when I place the surrounding flowers and leaves, they do not start right in the center of the main flower, the stems start slightly to the side of the petals- they also do not come out from the top of the petal- this just helps your bouquet to not look so cookie-cutter, and is more pleasing to the eye.
  3. Don’t overlap leaves on top of the flowers. When painting the leaves that would normally overlap the flowers if I continued with the full leaf shape, I instead stop painting that leaf right where the flower begins. This gives you the impression that the flower is in front of the leaf. It adds dimension to the painting; and also since my flowers are the focal point, I do not want any leaves covering them. Of course, If you would rather have the visual of the leaves on top of the flower, you can do the opposite!

My page here was inspired by Living By Design Ministry’s new FREE Bible study called Wisdom Whispers. The study goes through the life of King Solomon and what we can learn from his successes and his failures! I am a creative partner for the study and created free coloring pages that you receive each week. Super fun! If you are interested, you can sign-up for the study HERE. (And no I was not paid in any way to contribute or promote the study, it is just well worth sharing 🙂 )
