Hi Friends,
I am all about trying new things and stepping out of your comfort zone when it comes to Bible journaling, so today I am talking about a supply that I pretty recently discovered… masking fluid!
Masking fluid (also known as liquid frisket) is really common in the art world, and is starting to pop up in the Bible Journaling world as well! It is a school glue (or rubber cement)-like substance that really just acts as a protector. You paint it onto a spot on your page and let it dry. Then you can paint over it, and peel or rub the masking fluid off and it leaves your original background underneath! It is super cool!
And the great part for us Bible journalers is that masking fluid is totally safe for Bible journaling! I did not prepare my page (I hardly ever do) and all was just swell.
On my page here, I used it in a really simple way to do some lettering! It may not seem like the most exciting thing, but I really wouldn’t recommend it unless I think you would love it too!
Since making the video below, I have used my masking fluid quite a few times and it truly is a fun medium.
Check out the video below to see how I used it to make a simple Bible page with the masking fluid and watercolors or just scroll down for the cliff notes!

What I learned

So I have some cautions and things that I have learned the past few weeks using masking fluid, but I really don’t want these cautions to scare you off! This medium can be used in so many ways! Paint flowers or shapes to make a cool background. Or even paint or color a layer on your page; then use the masking fluid, and paint over it- then you can reveal parts of that original painting! How Fun!
- Masking fluid comes in a few forms. I decided to get THIS little tub of masking fluid to have the freedom to create anything I want- but, I think the masking fluid pen or THIS one that comes with a little needle tip would be easier to use (at least for lettering or small details). -There are also additional tools that you can use along with the bottles of masking fluid, such as Fineline applicators, or art ruling pens, that are said to work great- in case you’re interested!
- If you use a paintbrush like me, it will probably ruin your brush! So use a cheap one and set it aside as your “masking fluid brush”. The masking fluid gets all inside the bristles and once it dries (it dries quickly so this happens usually as you are still working), it is super hard to get out.
- Masking fluid also comes in different colors, some are white (like mine), and some are clear, blue, or yellow! I was still able to see my white masking fluid on my page, but some might find a tinted one easier.
- It doesn’t seem to matter whether your layer is thick or thin. Just try to make sure there are no bubbles. Also, try not to go over the mask multiple times or it can peel off.
