A while ago I did a four week series on Bible journaling with household objects. I Bible journaled using things like forks, bubble wrap, and even vegetables! I also did a few pages using q-tips!
Check out the household objects post to see how I used q-tips and watercolor to create some beautiful Bible journaling pages.
Q-tips are so much fun to use to create art! They are cheap and easy to use, and there is actually a surprising amount of things you can do with them! The most obvious way to use them is to create dots!
Well, I was casually strolling through Pinterest the other day and ended up down a “dot painting” rabbit hole, and I knew I needed to do something similar in my Bible.
If you haven’t ever heard of dot painting, it’s hard to describe! Artists create beautiful mandala-like paintings using just dots. Most of these dots are layered with different colors. There are AMAZING examples on Pinterest. I, however, don’t have any dot tools to make mine look anything like the dot paintings I found online.
But I have q-tips and an imagination! So I decided to paint a simplified version of dot painting in my Bible. I kept it easy by just doing straight lines of dots, rather than trying to create a shape, and I am so happy with how it turned out!
The Tutorial
This tutorial is great for beginners too!
You’ll want to use acrylic paints for this. But don’t worry, acrylic paints don’t bleed through the Journaling Bible page, and you don’t even need to prep the page. I also painted a dark background on my page, but you can use whatever colors you’d like for this! I encourage you to give it a try and have fun!
Another pro to this page is that it because it is fairly monotonous painting dots, it’s very relaxing and meditative. Perfect for spending time soaking in the word of God.

The Verse
The verse I journaled for this page was Philippians 2:3 which says, “Do nothing in selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
When first looking at my page, it’s not a very “humble” page. It’s very BAM and IN YOUR FACE. haha. But then I think about the dots and how each one is humble, making up a piece to the whole.

- ESV Double Column Journaling Bible
- Acrylic Paints– Link is for a pack of Apple Barrel paints that I love, but it does not include all the colors I used. I recommend just getting your paints at Walmart or the craft store, it’s much much cheaper. You can use any brand of acrylics, though I do prefer a matte acrylic over gloss to prevent stickiness.
- White UniPosca Paint Pen– Extra Fine Tip
- Small flat paintbrush and small round paintbrush– I don’t use any specific brand, I get synthetic brushes in value packs from the craft store
- Craft Heat Gun
