Have you ever used black or brown paint in your journaling Bible?
I have been LOVING utilizing dark backgrounds for Bible journaling pages lately.
The thing is that using black (or other dark) paint can be super intimidating, especially in our precious Bibles.
I conquered the black paint fear a few months ago, once I realized how striking my Bible journaling page was, but it wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that I realized I could use other dark colors like brown too!
Using dark colors is so intimidating because we don’t want to mess up our Bibles. And yeah, with dark colors it is harder to hide mistakes and easier to accidentally cover the text. But why limit ourselves because of fear!?
I think
So today I’m hoping to inspire you by showing a couple examples of my Bible journaling pages using dark acrylic backgrounds.
Check out the video below to see my “Bible Journaling With Me” tutorial!
Key Notes
-Acrylics are great because they don’t bleed through an unprepared Bible journaling page! Yup even black and brown don’t bleed! You can even use any brand of acrylic. I use the cheap Apple Barrel acrylics that you can get at Walmart.
-I personally don’t mind if I cover some of the text on the page in my Journaling Bibles. I use them just for Bible art worship, and have other Bibles I read and study from. But it’s a personal decision. A great Bible option that gives lots of journaling space without having to worry about covering the scripture is the ESV Interleaved Journaling Bible, which has full blank pages.
-Acrylics act as a page prep, so you can use markers/pens/inks that normally would bleed through on top of them!

- ESV Double Column Journaling Bible
- ESV Interleaved Journaling Bible
- Acrylic Paints– Link is for a pack of Apple Barrel paints that I love, but it does not include all the colors I used. I recommend just getting your paints at Walmart or the craft store, it’s much much cheaper. You can use any brand of acrylics, though I do prefer a matte acrylic over gloss to prevent stickiness.
- White UniPosca Paint Pen– Extra Fine Tip
- Small flat paintbrush and small round paintbrush– I don’t use any specific brand, I get synthetic brushes in value packs from the craft store
- Craft Heat Gun
