So over two years ago I did a tutorial on a watercolor forest and included a three-page free printable with it. I always loved that tutorial, but it didn’t get a ton of traction, and I totally forgot about it until recently!
Because it had been a while, I decided to remake the page using the outline from the free printable. And this time, instead of using watercolors again, I decided to use acrylic paints!
It is amazing to me how different the two pages look!

PLEASE NOTE:
-I used the ESV Interleaved Journaling Bible for both my watercolor and acrylic versions of this page. The Interleaved Bible has full blank pages. However, if you don’t have this Bible you can absolutely scale this to fit the margins by picking out a section of the printable guide that looks good in the margins of your Bible and just paint a few trees rather than the whole forest! You can also do this on a separate sheet of paper and make a tip-in out of it or create it in a separate sketchbook/notebook completely!
-In my original watercolor forest post, I do also show the same page I created the page in my normal 2″ margin Bible! I did go over the text on that page, but I still can read all the text underneath the watercolor. (Using acrylics though will make the scripture unreadable, so I recommend following the tips mentioned in the above paragraph.)
-Also! The printable linked above is three pages- It has a black and white guide for the tree trunks so that you can create the page yourself, but it also has a full-color print of my watercolor forest page- both with the lettering and without. So if you don’t want to create this forest page yourself, you can utilize that freebie!
The Tutorial
So, with no further ado, let’s get painting!
The Bible verse I worked on for this new page was Psalm 106: 48 which says: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! And let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the LORD!”

- FREE Watercolor Forest Printable
- ESV Interleaved Journaling Bible
- Acrylic Paints– Link is for a pack of Apple Barrel paints that I love, but it does not include all the colors I used. I recommend just getting your paints at Walmart or the craft store, it’s much much cheaper. You can use any brand of acrylics, though I do prefer a matte acrylic over gloss to prevent stickiness.
- White UniPosca Paint Pen– Extra Fine Tip
- Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen
- Small round paintbrush– I don’t use any specific brand, I get synthetic brushes in value packs from the craft store
- Craft Heat Gun
PAINT COLORS I USED: Admiral Blue, Pavement, Teal, Summer Sky, Palm Green, Marsh Green, English Ivy Green, Bright Yellow, Burnt Umber, Territorial Beige, White.
