I wasn’t originally planning on doing a tutorial on this “abstract outlined florals” page, but I posted it on Instagram and got so many requests to do a tutorial on it. I hadn’t really realized until then what a great tutorial it would make!
It is simple and quick to do and is a great one for beginner Bible Journalers looking to get their feet wet with watercolors.
It is easy because you literally start by putting blobs of color down and then outline it quickly and without worry to make it look like flowers! It doesn’t take much knowledge of watercolor or much artistic ability because the point is for it to look abstract.
The beauty of abstract watercolor like this is that as long as you have a group of blobs and some green to represent leaves, you most likely will end up with something that resembles flowers! It’s so fun!
The key is to not overthink it! Just enjoy the process and the time spent with the Lord. Use this time to really focus on the scripture rather than the brush strokes.
This page took me less that 15 minutes start to finish! So it also is a great one if you have a limited about of time, but still want to get in the Word.
A note on Bible journaling with watercolors:
Watercolors are a great tool for Bible journaling (probably my favorite). The brand of watercolor that you use does make an impact though. Many brands will bleed through an unprepared page, so you would need to prepare the page with gesso first. However, gesso makes watercolors react differently. I personally don’t like working with watercolors on top of gesso, so I do not prep my pages, and only work with my Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors that I know don’t bleed through. They also are great watercolors that are very pigmented and come in so many colors.
