I was flipping through one of my first Journaling Bibles the other day (this one here) and I came upon one of my favorite Bible journaling pages, which was this two-page entry with watercolor branches. I did this page only a few months into Bible art journaling, and it was one of those pages that I was just sooo proud of. I’m still proud of it!

My new page, done in 2020. I love them both!

One of the reasons I think I like it so much is that instead of just doing it on one Bible page, I did it on both the left and right pages. I think it makes it look so grand and impressive!

The other thing about this page is that it looks so complex, but really it’s rather simple and is great for beginners! You just paint a leaf shape over and over going in slightly different directions, and then connect them all together! You only really need two watercolors, a brown and a green (I always use my Kuretake Gansai Tambi set).

You can also do this same thing with acrylic paint! I have a tutorial for acrylic branches HERE

The Tutorial

So, since it has been over three years since I created my first watercolor branches two-page spread, I figured it was a good time to recreate it!

Don’t ever feel like you need to create something completely new for each Bible journaling page! I create the same pages a lot! It’s just about spending time in the word and worshiping Him. The art really doesn’t matter, it’s just a bonus!

Check out the video below to see how I created my updated watercolor branches page! It is fun to see how much I have improved!

Notes

-I do not prep my pages with gesso when using watercolors. (Not watercolors are the same. I haven’t had any bleed through with the Kuretake set I use, but other brands may bleed through, test it out in the back of your Bible.)

-Though I painted over the text of my pages, I can still read all the scripture. I personally don’t mind if I can’t read every word in this Bible though because I have others I read and study from. Completely personal preference and you can always keep it just to the margins, work in a separate journal, or create tip-ins if you don’t want to cover the scripture.
